SEMAA CURRICULUM - Project Description

The NASA Science Engineering Mathematics and Aerospace Academy, or SEMAA, is a national, innovative project designed to increase participation and retention of historically underrepresented K-12 youth in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM.

SEMAA has emerged as a nationally renowned leader in the efforts to increase the participation of historically underserved K-12 youth in the areas of STEM. Established as a joint venture in 1993 between NASA Glenn Research Center and Cuyahoga Community College, the project has grown from a single site to a national organization that is supported by Congress and dedicated to improving the academic success of children nationwide.


This is an online resource for the adult care givers of children who are currently participating in, or are interested in participating in the NASA SEMAA program.

Understanding Family Involvement
Overwhelming evidence from research suggests that when families get personally involved in education, their children do better in school and grow up to be successful in life. Yet, family involvement is one of the most overlooked aspects of American education. Today, many programs are designed without recognition of the role of families, and consequently many families remain unaware of the significance that their role can have on their child's education. Family involvement is an important component of the NASA Explorer Schools project. The purpose of the family involvement component is to engage families as partners in the educational process.

The family involvement program herein was developed to give families, regardless of their own educational experience, the tools needed to become more actively involved in their child's day-to-day education.


The AEL is a state-of-the-art, electronically enhanced, computerized classroom that puts cutting- edge technology at the fingertips of NASA SEMAA students in middle and high school; it engages students in real world challenges relative to both aeronautics and space exploration. The AEL houses real aerospace hardware and software including an Advanced Flight Simulator, a laboratory-grade, a research wind tunnel, and a working, short-wave radio receiver and hand- held global positioning systems, or GPS, for aviation.

Students can engage in the building and programming of the NXT Robots (Grades 5-12) or the Wee Bots (Grades 1-3). Contact the AEL lab coordinator to set up dates and times to have a demonstration or to check out the kits. Competitions available for upper grades.

The Star Lab is a portable Planetarium that can show a wide array of presentations from Lakota star knowledge to our most recognized constellations. Teachers can be certified and then be able to schedule a time to check out the lab to use at their location.

The OLC Astronomy Club is an organization of individuals interested in the night sky. In conjunction or separate for the SEMAA program you may participate in a variety of activities from star gazing to star gazing at your school site.
